Actor Headshots · Preparation Guide
Preparing for your first actor headshot session can feel unfamiliar. What should you wear? How many outfits do you need? Should you practise expressions beforehand? This guide explains how to arrive prepared, relaxed and ready for photographs that genuinely represent you.
Before the camera
If you have never booked professional actor headshots before, it is natural to feel uncertain about what will happen. You might worry about looking awkward, choosing the wrong clothes or not knowing how to pose.
The good news is that you do not need to arrive knowing how to perform for a still camera. A professional headshot session should involve guidance, conversation and time to find expressions that feel natural to you.
I photograph actors and performers across Swansea, Cardiff and South Wales, using carefully controlled lighting and straightforward direction to create portraits that are recognisable, believable and professionally useful.
If you are still deciding what kind of session you need, you can explore my actor headshot photography in South Wales before booking.
01 · Wardrobe
Clothing should support the photograph rather than dominate it. The aim is to show your face, personality and casting potential without unnecessary distractions.
Start with clothes that fit well and feel natural. Plain tops, simple layers and colours that complement your skin tone are often a useful starting point.
My advice: Bring a few considered options rather than an entire wardrobe. We can make decisions based on how each outfit works with your face and the lighting.
02 · Hair & appearance
Actor headshots need to represent your current appearance. That means your hairstyle, facial hair, complexion and general presentation should be recognisable to somebody meeting you for the first time.
Avoid making a dramatic change to your appearance immediately before the session unless that change is intended to become your everyday look.
Hair should be clean and styled in a way that feels familiar. Makeup, if worn, is generally best kept natural and consistent with how you would normally present yourself.
If you regularly wear glasses, bring them. We can discuss whether photographs with and without glasses would be useful for your particular requirements.
A strong actor headshot should look like you on a good day, not like somebody else.
03 · Expressions
You do not need to memorise poses or rehearse a collection of facial expressions before arriving.
In fact, concentrating too heavily on producing a particular expression can sometimes make a portrait feel less natural.
A useful actor headshot is not simply about smiling at the camera. Thoughtful, open, serious, warm and confident expressions can all have a place, depending on the actor and the intended use.
My approach is to work through these variations gradually. Small adjustments to posture, eye contact and expression can create meaningful differences without asking you to exaggerate or perform a character.
04 · On the day
Every photographer works differently, but my sessions are designed to provide enough guidance and time for you to settle into the process.
We discuss your requirements, clothing choices and how the photographs will be used.
I guide you through posture, expression and eye contact while adjusting the lighting to suit your face.
Different clothing, lighting and expressions help create a useful selection rather than a series of identical frames.
My background in television and film lighting also informs how I approach portraits. Rather than applying identical lighting to every actor, I consider facial structure, expression and the overall impression each photograph creates.
05 · Preparation checklist
Preparation does not need to be complicated. A few practical things can help the session run smoothly.
If you have been given specific headshot requirements by an agent or casting organisation, mention them before your session. We can consider those requirements when planning the photographs.
06 · Casting profiles
Your photographs should provide an accurate, current representation of your appearance.
A clear lead headshot is often more useful than a photograph that relies on dramatic styling or elaborate effects. Additional images can provide variation in expression, presentation and mood.
The purpose is not to create an entirely different identity in every photograph. It is to show a believable range while remaining recognisably the same person.

07 · Choosing your photographs
It can be tempting to choose whichever photograph feels the most flattering. However, an effective actor headshot needs to do more than look attractive.
Look for photographs where your expression feels believable, your eyes are engaged and your appearance is accurately represented.
Consider whether the photographs work together as a set. A selection of nearly identical smiles may be less useful than a smaller group showing meaningful differences in expression and presentation.
If you have an agent, their input may be helpful when selecting the most appropriate images for your casting profile.

Frequently asked questions
No. Actors at the beginning of their careers can benefit from professional photographs when preparing for representation, training opportunities and casting applications.
Two or three carefully chosen options are a useful starting point. The number of changes we can explore will depend on the session you book.
Smiling photographs can be useful, but they are not essential in every frame. A good selection may include different natural expressions.
That is completely normal. You do not need previous modelling or photography experience. I provide direction throughout the session.
Actor headshots can be created with Spotlight and other casting-profile uses in mind. Always check any current technical requirements before uploading.
My Essential actor headshot session starts at £295. Professional and Premium options are also available for longer sessions and greater variety.
