A child actor headshot should look like the young performer who will actually walk into an audition, appear on a self-tape or be considered from a casting profile.
It should feel current, natural and recognisable — while still showing enough personality for someone viewing the image to begin understanding who that young performer is.
Experience with young performers
I have photographed child actors and young performers for more than 20 years, including regular headshot work for Beverly Thomas Acting Agency in Swansea.
Many of those photographs have been created specifically for performers' Spotlight profiles, and I have photographed some young performers several times as they have grown and their appearance has changed.
My other professional life is as a freelance Lighting Director working across television and film. That has also meant regularly working around child actors and young performers on professional productions.
The aim is not to make a child look older, more polished or more theatrical. The aim is to make a clear, current photograph of the young performer they are now.
Natural, current, recognisable
With children and teenagers, a headshot can become outdated much faster than it might for an adult. Hair changes, faces mature, teeth change, height and proportions alter and the overall impression of the young performer can move on surprisingly quickly.
In practice, I often see the same young performer again as they grow. There is no arbitrary timetable that suits every child — the important question is whether the photograph still looks like them now.
That matters particularly when the image is being used on a casting or agency profile, because the photograph should help create recognition rather than surprise.
Spotlight & agency profiles
I regularly photograph young performers whose final images are used on Spotlight profiles and in agency-facing materials.
That does not mean every image should look identical. The strongest set normally gives a clear lead portrait together with enough variation to show different sides of the same young person without turning the session into costume or character photography.
I have also worked regularly with Beverly Thomas Acting Agency in Swansea over many years, photographing young performers at different stages as they develop.
I do not claim that one expression, crop or lighting style guarantees a casting outcome. The goal is a professional set that remains truthful, readable and useful.
What happens during the session
Young performers are not smaller versions of adult clients. Some settle immediately. Others need a little time before the camera stops feeling important.
I keep the process straightforward and responsive. We might begin with simple conversation and neutral expressions, then gradually explore warmer, more thoughtful or more animated frames as the young performer becomes comfortable.
A parent, guardian or responsible adult is present during child and young-performer sessions.
I work with the personality in front of me rather than trying to force the same expression from every child.
Sessions can take place at the client's location or another suitable location across South Wales.

This recent session was photographed at the family’s home, where I set up a compact working studio and built the shoot around the young performer rather than asking her to fit a single visual formula.
We moved from clean, high-key portraits with close attention to the eyes, through classic actor headshots and softer expressions, into more dramatic lighting and a darker character-led treatment requested as part of the brief.

These photographs keep the treatment deliberately clean. The lighting is soft and open, the expression is understated and the attention stays with the face.
02 · Classic actor headshots
A useful set does not need every frame to feel identical. Small changes in posture, wardrobe and expression can give a young performer a broader but still truthful range of photographs.
03 · Signature lighting
This is where my television and film lighting background becomes more visible. I use direction, contrast and shadow to shape mood while keeping the portrait age-appropriate and centred on the young performer.
The purpose is not to make every young performer look cinematic. It is to have enough control over light to create the right visual language when the brief calls for something more dramatic.
04 · Character brief
Alongside the conventional headshots, the brief included darker, horror-influenced portraits. These images were intentionally pushed further through expression, framing and lighting rather than being presented as standard casting headshots.
The entire session was created at the client’s home. I brought the lighting and background setup with me, which meant we could create a controlled portrait environment without asking a young performer to work in an unfamiliar studio.
For parents, agents and young performers, that flexibility can be useful: the session can remain calm and familiar while still producing a professionally varied set of photographs.

Expression & personality
Parents understandably love photographs where their child looks happy. But a professional performer profile may benefit from a wider emotional range.
A young performer can look open, thoughtful, confident, serious, mischievous, warm or contained — and none of those needs to feel exaggerated.
The session gives us room to explore that naturally. Sometimes the more playful frames are also useful during the process because they help the child relax, reset and stop thinking about being photographed.

My background as a freelance BBC and ITV Lighting Director means I have spent decades working with people and faces under professional production conditions. For headshots, I use that experience quietly: shaping light around the individual rather than imposing the same lighting formula on everyone.
With young performers especially, I want the result to remain natural and age-appropriate.
From children to teenagers
A three-year-old and a sixteen-year-old should not be photographed in exactly the same way.
Younger children may need more movement, conversation and breaks. Older young performers often have clearer ideas about the kinds of roles they are pursuing and may be ready to explore more subtle differences in expression and presentation.
The consistent principle is accuracy: the photographs should still feel like the young person themselves, at the age and stage they are now.
For parents & guardians
Keep preparation simple. The final headshots need to be about the young performer rather than a complicated wardrobe or highly styled presentation.
You do not need to coach expressions before arriving. That is part of my job during the session.
