How Much Do Actor Headshots Cost in the UK?
Actor headshot prices can look surprisingly difficult to compare. One photographer may charge for the session, another for individual finished photographs, while another includes a larger collection. The useful question is not simply “what does a headshot cost?” — it is what you actually receive for the price.
The short answer
There is no single standard price for actor headshots.
Across the UK, actor headshot photographers use very different pricing models. Some offer a lower session fee and charge separately for finished images. Others include a set number of edited files. Longer sessions may include more changes of clothing, locations or lighting setups.
That means two prices that look very different at first glance may become much closer once you compare the complete service.
Before comparing prices, compare what is actually included: the photographer's experience, session length, number of looks, how the photographs are created, how many edited files you receive and whether there are additional image charges afterwards.
This is also consistent with guidance for performers from Spotlight , which advises actors to consider cost, session time, the number of photographs supplied, editing and whether the shoot takes place indoors or outdoors when choosing a headshot photographer.
What changes the price?
Six things you should compare before booking.
Price alone tells you very little about a headshot session. These are the factors that usually make the greatest difference to what you are buying.
Session time
A short session may be enough when you need one straightforward update. More time allows you to settle in, explore expression and create a broader range of usable photographs.
Photographer experience
Headshots are not simply about owning a good camera. Understanding faces, expression, performance and light can materially affect the quality and consistency of the finished work.
Lighting
Some sessions rely primarily on available light; others use shaped, controlled professional lighting. The important question is whether the photographer can create consistent results that still look natural and recognisably like you.
Number of looks
Clothing, background, expression and lighting can change how you read on camera. Longer sessions generally provide more room to create genuine variety rather than variations of one photograph.
Images included
This is one of the easiest details to miss. A session price may include one photograph, five photographs, a fixed collection or all of the photographer's finished edited images.
Additional costs
Check whether extra finished files, travel, rush delivery or other additions are charged separately. The headline session price is not always the final amount you will spend.
Experience has value
You are paying for decisions about light — not just time with a camera.
I have spent more than 25 years working as a Lighting Director for the BBC and ITV. That experience has taught me to look at faces in terms of shape, skin tone, expression, eye light and how subtle changes in illumination alter the way somebody reads on camera.
Actor headshots require restraint. The purpose is not to create an elaborate lighting effect or turn you into a character. A casting photograph needs to remain recognisable, current and centred on the performer.
But achieving a natural result does not mean lighting is unimportant. Good lighting should feel almost invisible: it supports the face, preserves detail and allows expression to do the work.

The cheapest session is not necessarily the cheapest way to obtain the photographs you need — and the most expensive session is not automatically the right one.
The detail people often miss
How many finished images are actually included?
This is where comparing actor headshot prices becomes particularly important.
There are photographers who include a small number of edited files in the initial price and allow clients to purchase additional photographs afterwards. Others offer packages containing progressively larger numbers of finished images.
Neither structure is inherently wrong. What matters is that you understand the model before booking.
If a lower-priced session includes only a handful of finished photographs, ask yourself how many you realistically expect to want once you see the shoot. Additional files can materially change the final cost.
Ask these questions before comparing two quotes:
- How many edited high-resolution photographs will I receive?
- Are additional photographs charged separately?
- Is editing included in the advertised session price?
- How much time is included?
- How many clothing changes or looks can we realistically create?
- Are there travel or other additional charges?
Time versus variety
A longer session should give you more than simply more photographs.
The value of extra session time is the opportunity to create meaningful variety.
You may want a straightforward casting headshot alongside images with different clothing, backgrounds or subtle changes in mood and expression. More time also gives you space to become comfortable in front of the camera rather than expecting the strongest expression to happen in the first few minutes.
This is why I structure my actor sessions primarily around time, variety and flexibility, rather than selling individual photographs one at a time.
My approach
All edited images are included.
I prefer clients to understand the complete cost of their session before we begin.
There is no need to decide in advance that you only want a small number of photographs, and there is no separate charge afterwards to purchase additional edited images from the session.
The difference between my session options is therefore primarily the amount of time and creative variety available — not an artificial limit on how many edited photographs you are allowed to keep.

What do my actor headshot sessions cost?
I work with actors across Swansea, Cardiff and the wider South Wales area. Sessions are built around how much time and variety you need, with professional controlled lighting throughout.
My current actor headshot sessions are:
- Essential — £295: one-hour session with up to two outfit changes.
- Professional — £445: two-hour session with greater scope for different looks, clothing and locations.
- Comprehensive — £595: three-hour session for actors who want the greatest amount of time, range and flexibility.
Every option includes all edited images from the session as high-resolution digital files.

Making the decision
How much should you spend on actor headshots?
Spend according to what you actually need at this stage of your career rather than assuming the longest or shortest session must automatically be right.
If you are creating your first professional headshots and need a focused collection, a shorter session may be entirely appropriate. If you are refreshing an established portfolio, approaching agents, or want greater variation across your photographs, additional time can become much more useful.
What I would not recommend is choosing solely from the headline price. Find out who is photographing you, look carefully at their work, understand what the session includes and establish exactly what photographs you will receive afterwards.
Your headshot is there to represent you. The right session is the one that gives you photographs that are current, credible and useful for the way you are actually presenting yourself to the industry.
